What is a sling ?
A sling is a suspended piece of fabric that is locked in channels on the side rails. Slings require a specialty fabric that is designed to not only weather the UV rays but also be able to be able to be suspended and hold the weight of the person sitting in the chair or chaise lounge. Most slings have a simple design with 2 pockets on the left and right side of the sling that are slide into the side rail channels with a spline in the center locking it into the channel.
What kind of fabric is used for sling replacements ?
Sling fabrics come in many colors, patterns and weaves but are all nylon fabric that are made specific for use. Sling fabrics have also been used for placemats, umbrellas covers, cushions and many more outdoor application.
How hard is it to make your own slings ?
Slings replacements are not hard in concept to make. If you know how to sew you make able to do-it-your-self built does require them to be precise. You only have a variance of 1/8" or the sling will be too big or too small and with not fit or sag after a few uses.
How hard is it to install a sling ?
Patio Sling Furniture Replacement installs are not impossible for the average person to install at home. In theory you remove the old sling out of the 2 side rails and slide the new sling in and your done. Well, not so fast... it takes ALOT of time and determination to get it done. The old sling has been in there for on average 5-7 years and there is a lot of dirt build up that is acting like glue. Once you have gotten the sling out and cleaned the channel you can slide the new sling in. Once that is done and the sling is put into place you will need to get the side bars that are wider then the sling back into the chair. The side bars help maintain the pressure and take the stress of the side rail bolts or welds. Out of all of the steps in replacing you patio furniture sling, the install is what most are able to do them selves, as many do not own a sewing machine and or know how to sew.
How long do Patio Furniture slings last ?
On average most patio furniture sling last 5-7 years with a good commercial grade sling fabric if left in direct sun light. If slings are in shade most of the time or under an awing you can get 20+ years out of slings. If the fabric is cheap with not adequate UV ray protection you may only be able to get 2-3 years out of those slings.
Do covering or bring in sling patio furniture in the winter help prolong the life ?
No, the winter weather do not prolong the life of the slings. The UV rays is what damages the sling fabric the most. If your slings channels do not have drain holes and you are where it freezes then bring them in may help. When sling side rails do not have drain hole to let out the water inside of the channel then the water can freeze and expand the sling channel making the slings not fit into the channel anymore.
